My darling Grandpa Hans was born in Denmark and immigrated to the United States with his brothers in the 1930's.

He met Lillian in Solvang, California. They were both living at the "Danish Home" a hotel like residence for newly immigrated Danes. They became acquainted and soon fell in love. They were married not long after that and my sweet Auntie was born to them. Lillian died at a very early age and Grandpa Hans and Auntie were left alone.

He married my Grandma Sonie in 1952. It was his second marriage and her third marriage. They were a happy couple for the rest of their lives.

I never knew that my Grandpa Hans was my step-grandfather. the word "step" was never used -- he was always just "Grandpa Hans". I thought I was special because I had 3 grandpas and 3 grandmas.

I have been told that I was his favorite grandchild, even above his own grandchildren. I was the only grandchild he would take with him when he went anywhere. I really liked it when we went to the grocery store because he would always buy me candy.

On August 18, 2007, at the Convalescent Care Center, Lompoc City Council-member DeWayne Holmdahl presented a certificate of special recognition to my Grandpa Hans for his 100th Birthday.

He told my Auntie -- his only child -- that he was going to live to be 100 years old and then he was going to quit. He lived to be 100 years and 4 months old.

I love my darling Grandpa Hans and I miss him so very much. I can hardly wait for the day when I see him again.

Jeg elsker dig min elskede bedstefar!
