Hollis Cornelious Spence, 72, of Mount Olive, N.C., died Wednesday, January 30, 2002, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C.

A native of Botetourt County, he was a son of the late Simon Edgar and Gladys Williams Spence.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Korean Conflict and received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a self-employed carpenter and was formerly employed as an engineer with Civil Service at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Surviving are his wife, Ruby "Susie Q" Pruitt Spence; three sons, James Kenneth Goin of Mount Olive, Gregory Allen Spence of Belfast, N.C., and Hollis Chad Spence of Mount Olive; one daughter, Ruby Dawn Hardison of Mount Olive; three brothers, Bobby Spence of Stuart, James Spence of Patrick Springs and Raymond Spence of Littleton, Colo.; five sisters, Lillian Higgins of Lexington, N.C., Gracie Sigmon of Bassett, Dorothy Spence and Virginia Brown, both of Lexington, and Josie Bowman of Westfield, N.C.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Friday at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. The Rev. Ed Rouse, Spence's nephew, the Rev. Jackie Spence, and Ken Powell officiated. Burial was in Wayne Memorial Park.
