William Anderson Dabney was born October 15, 1845 in Decatur, Georgia. He was the son of William Harris and Martha Buckingham Williams.
Members of the First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff related to this Dabney family are; Isabelle Cornish Dabney (wife of Joseph Warren Cook); their daughter, Minnie Cook, wife of John Harvey Means was the mother of John H. Means, Jr. and Warren Cook Means. Virginia Lee Dabney (wife of Glenn Albert Railsback, Jr.) is the mother of Glenn A. Railsback, III, his son and grandson, Glenn A. Railsback, IV and Jacob T. Railsback. William Anderson Dabney, Isabelle Cornish Dabney, and Virginia Lee Dabney Railsback descend from John Dabney of Virginia.
On July 5, 1862, at the age of seventeen, William A. Dabney enlisted in Co. A 12th Battalion Georgia Light Artillery, Transferred to Co. A 63rd Regiment Georgia Infantry in October 1862, and detailed in Ordnance Department February 1864. W. A. Dabney was wounded at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on June 27, 1864. Appointed 1st Sergeant of Co. K, 1st Consolidated Regiment Georgia Infantry, April 10, 1865. He surrendered on April 26, 1865 near Greensboro, North Carolina with the Army of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston. "Furled a bloody flag, but a stainless one."
After the War, William A. Dabney was a student at Washington College, now Washington and Lee University. It was here that he met and married Lucy Bailey Campbell, (born December 4, 1850, [died] buried February 29, 1932) daughter of Professor John Lyle Campbell and his wife Harriet Peters Bailey. Two children were born to this marriage; Martha Williams Dabney, born September 24, 1874 in Virginia and William Lyle Dabney, born May 16, 1876 in Virginia and died in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 18, 1950.
William A. Dabney attended Columbia Seminary for one year and graduated from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia where he attended from 1873 to 1875. He was Ordained on June 7, 1876 and Licensed on June 29, 1875 by the Atlanta Presbytery. He served as Pastor of Hunter Street Presbyterian Church in Atlanta from 1876 to 1879.
Rev. William Anderson Dabney appears in the Session Minutes of the First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff for the first time on July 15, 1879. On April 3, 1880, Lucy C. Dabney, wife of Rev. W. A. Dabney, with their two children were received into Church membership by letter from the Hunter Street Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Georgia, the names of the children to be placed on the list of infant membership.
On June 24, 1880 the Rev. W. A. Dabney, his wife, two children and his brother John were living next door to J. W. Cook, his wife B. (Isabelle Dabney) in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Rev. Dabney's ministry in Pine Bluff ended in 1881 as the Pine Bluff Press reported on February 3, 1881, "Last Sunday night a large and intelligent congregation assembled at the Presbyterian Church of this city to listen to the farewell sermon of the above divine" (Rev. W. A. Dabney).
At the Session meeting of September 18, 1881, Letters of Dismissal to Mrs. Lucy C. Dabney and children (Willie and Mattie) to Covington, Virginia were approved. Present at the Session meeting was Rev. Joseph A. Dickson who opened the meeting with prayer.
William Anderson Dabney died October 8, 1927 in New Orleans, Louisiana. William Anderson Dabney and his wife Lucy Bailey Campbell Dabney are buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia, Section 6, along with his parents.
