Born in Mahanoy City, April 23, 1916, she was a daughter of the late former Congressman Ivor D and Margaret Theresa Lewis Fenton.
She graduated from Mahanoy City High School in 1933 and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Penn State University in 1937. Mary taught for the Mahanoy Area School District, retiring in 1980.
She was a lifetime member of First Congregational Church, Mahanoy City.
Mary's membership included Puritan Chapter 126 Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Post 74 Ladies Auxiliary, Mahanoy City Public Library Board of Trustees, Women's Welsh Club of America and Mahanoy Area Alumni Association, all of Mahanoy City; Alpha Omnicron Pi-Epsilon Alpha Chapter, National Sorority, Penn State Alumni Association, Penn State Club of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Woodmen of the World National Benevolent Society and the Coal Crackers Chapter of the Red Hat Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James J Kernan; and a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Lewis.
Surviving are two daughters, Marbeth, wife of Paul Petrucka, Orem UTh, and Kathryn, wife of Daniel Pedriani, Gwynedd; a sister, Margaret T Brewer, Miami FL.; seven grandchildren, James Petrucka and wife, Christi, Paige Petrucka, Mark Petrucka and his wife, Cindy, David Petrucka and wife, Liesl, Seth Petrucka and wife, Luz, Daniel J Pedriani III and Tessa Smith and husband, Greg; twenty great-grandchildren, Isaac, Thomas, Elizabeth, Natalie, Emily, Brandon, Bryce, Joy, Mary, Adam, Lydia, Hazel, Jennifer, Megan, Melanie, Paul and Joseph Petrucka, and Drew, Abby and Tyler Smith; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Jane Clifford Ritz Funeral Home, 19 E Mahanoy Ave, Mahanoy City, with the Rev Robert Adams officiating. Interment will follow in German Protestant Cemetery, Mahanoy Township. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions to the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund, c/o Betsy Lewis, 1319 E Centre St, Mahanoy City PA 17948.
