Mrs. Dodie Crawford executes colorful mosaics
What started out as a hobby - that of making mosaics - may well turn into a thriving business for Mrs. Dodie Crawford of 5102 Beachcomber, Oxnard Shores.
Mrs. Crawford began making mosaics in 1959, when she used ceramic bathroom tiles in executing her designs. These worked out so well that she invested in more expensive tiles, such as Venetian glass, and three months ago made her first sale, an abstract, to a San Francisco art critic.
Her favorite mosaic, however, is the Empress Theodora which was done in Byzantine imported from Venice, Italy.
“I’ve been told that Byzantine is a real art and not a craft,” Mrs. Crawford advised. Her Empress, which has been sold to Col. and Mrs. D.M. Perdew of Omaha, Neb., is three by four feet and weighs 35 pounds. It took her three months to execute it.
She is also working with Byzantine on Emperor Justinian of the same period. Both sketches were made from pictures of mosaics in the Choir at San Vite, Ravenna, Italy.
Another favorite is the “family tree” mosaic, which measures five feet by 1 foot and hangs over the range at the Crawford home. It depicts the family’s interests: a horse, since horse faces are Mrs. Crawford’s hobby; their daughter playing the organ; a house; and cat, inasmuch as the Crawfords have a Siamese.
“An Alhambra family has ordered a 72 by 19-inch mosaic of their family tree, too,” Mrs. Crawford said. A Model-T Ford and a model will be among the pictures depicted.
Mrs. Crawford works her sketches out with pencil and paper. She then scotch tapes the bits of Venetian glass or Byzantine to the paper and studies the result before gluing it to her sketch. She executes the color scheme as the picture progresses.
Besides abstracts, plaques and ashtrays, Mrs. Crawford has made tops for six coffee tables. One of these, a fish design, took third place at the Pomona County Fair in 1960. She took her ideas for the design from material in the national Geographic.
Another coffee table top in the Crawford home bears the family coat-of-arms with the motto, “sine late nota” which means “name without stain.”
Mrs. Crawford has never taken lessons in mosaics, although she has a strong background in art. She studied life drawing four years in Alhambra, oil painting in Oxnard, and ceramics in Ventura.
Other hobbies pursued by Mrs. Crawford are bridge and gardening. Among her favorite flowers are tuberous begonias and fuchsias.
Mrs. Crawford is married to R.B. Crawford, U.S.N.R. retired and now working as an engineer in Pt. Mugu’s Range Development center.
The couple has a daughter, Mrs. James E. Farr of Sells, Ariz., formerly employed in the finance office at City Hall.

Dodie died at the age of 74 in Pasadena, L.A. county, CA. of cancer. She is buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California in the same Mausoleum (El Portal de la Paz) as her mother, Ethel (but in the Seclusion Dawn section, Lot N, Grave 23. She is in the last row on the right, 2nd niche from the top. Her niche does not yet have a marker.
