Donald L. Lanning - Born in Fenton on November 2, 1935, died at Dallas Medical City Hospital on December 12, 2009, following a long illness.

He was survived by his daughter, Victoria Davis; his son-in-law, Ronnie Davis and his beloved granddaughter, Sophia Diana Frances Davis. He is also survived by three brothers, Robert Lanning, Arnold Lanning and Larry Lanning; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donald Lanning was pre-deceased by his wife Marilyn (Jean) Temming Lanning, his sister Beverly Clark and his brother William Lanning, as well as his parents, William and Frances (Feley) Lanning.

During his youth, Donald took great joy in helping his father at the family's gas station in Fenton, playing in the river that ran beside their house and raising pigeons. After serving in the U.S. Army, including a stint in Korea, Donald returned to Michigan. Donald went to work for General Motors at the V-8 Engine Plant in Flint, where he worked until his retirement in 1982.

In 1956, Donald married Marilyn and they were soon joined by their daughter, Victoria. Donald was known to all for the great joy he took in playing Santa Claus for anyone who asked. Even when not in his Santa suit, his long white beard and twinkling blue eyes meant that he was approached by excited children wherever he went. For many years he carried Santa stickers to hand out to the children who came over to talk to him.

Donald was once featured in a Flint Journal article for his role as Santa.

Donald's favorite pastimes were gardening, fishing and hunting. Donald attended the Linden Presbyterian Church and later the Tyrone Presbyterian Church in Fenton. Donald, Marilyn and their daughter enjoyed traveling and visited most parts of the country in their motor home. They camped for many years with the White Pines Travel Club. After retirement they purchased a home in Port Aransas Texas, where Donald loved to fish and watch ships and marine life in the nearby shipping channel and took great joy in driving on the local beaches. Donald is sadly missed by family and friends in Michigan and Texas.
