A native Californian, Elmer M. Gorsline was born in Glendale CA in 1894. He spent his early years in California and Idaho. After his marriage in 1916 to Ethlyn Paige three children were born, Ethlyn Gertrude (Gorsline) Barneby and Gary (Elmer Reuben) Gorsline, and Alan Paige Gorsline. In 1922 Elmer became ill with influenza while working on a truck farm in Arroyo Grande CA. His doctor recommended he move to a drier climate for his health, so he packed up his family and moved to Lancaster, CA. There he worked keeping cattle out of the artesian wells that formed lakes west of the town. He also had the job of shooting them if they became mired too deep in the mud, or chasing them out of people's rose gardens.
Later he bought ten acres, built an adobe home on it, and started a sucessful chicken ranch. He and his wife also housed boys who were wards of the County Courts.
