Sister Maria Andrew Allen, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on April 8, 1997 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.


Born on June 4, 1904 in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary O'Donnell Allen. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 29, 1925, made temporary profession of hervows on December 28, 1927, and final profession of her vows on July 31, 1931.


Sister Maria Andrew served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Justin Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1928 to 1929; St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA, from 1929 to 1930; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, from 1930 to 1931; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD, from 1931 to 1934; St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings, PA, from 1934 to 1935; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1935 to 1948; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1948 to 1954; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark's Green, PA, from 1954 to 1959; St. Mary Elementary School in Manhasset, NY, from 1965 to 1966; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA, from 1966 to 1972; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD, from 1973 to 1983.


Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Agnes Catechetical Center in Forest City, PA, from 1959 to 1965 and 1972 to 1973.


Sister Maria Andrew served as a prayer minister at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Convent in Dunmore, from 1983 to 1990, and at the Marian Conven from 1990 to the time of her death.


She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.


She was preceded in death by a brother, James, and two sisters, Mary Allen Gibbons and Sr. Maria Theophane, IHM.


She is survived by a niece, Margaret Gibbons McGraw of Dunmore, PA.


The funeral will be on Wednesday, April 16 at 10:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel, followed by interment in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Tuesday after 2 p.m. at the Marian Convent.

Through constant witness of gentle and affirming kindness, Sr. Maria Andrew touched the hearts of hundreds of young children. A teacher, principal, catechist and musician Sister introduced her students to the unconditional love of God with her tender, gentle spirit. Throughout her 70 years as an IHM sister, she served in elementary schools located in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York.
