Two More Are Killed In Action. Two more Pulaskians have been killed in action, according to messages received by relatives from the War Department during the past week. They were Staff Sgt. Edwin P Dykes, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan C. Dykes, of Burnetta and husband of Mrs. Hazel Meece Dykes of Drum; and PFC Farris Leigh, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Leigh of Eubank. Sgt. Dykes was killed in action Oct 15 in France. He had been in the Army since Jan 13, 1942, and overseas since April. He engaged in farming and coal mining in the Ruth section before entering the Army. He was well liked and leaves many friends. Besides his wife and his parents, he is survived by an eight month old daughter, Ola Mae. ….

Purple Hearts Sent Mother of Two Slain. The Purple Heart awarded posthumously to S/Sgt. Edwin P. Dykes has been sent by the War Department along with his personal belongings, to his mother Mrs. Jonathan P. Dykes. Sgt. Dykes was killed in action in France November 15. Mrs. Dykes who now lives in Somerset, formerly resided at Burnetta. The Purple Heart has also been awarded another son, Pvt. James H. Dykes, who was killed in the Southwest Pacific November 9, and has been received by Mrs. Dykes. The Presidential Citation was also awarded Pvt. Dykes.
