According to documentation on census's William's parentage and country of birth are unclear. His recollection of early years, are somewhat skewed, perhaps deliberate. It is now thought that he was born in Toronto, Canada to Hugh and Ellen(Armstrong) Montgomery, both Irish immigrants.

The owner of this memorial has just uncovered information regarding William's, young life, in Toronto,Canada. Perhaps leaving and coming to Michigan as early as 1891.

An 1891 census, in Toronto Canada, showing is parents Hugh and Eleanor, and siblings Agnes, Jennie, William, Elizabeth, Hughenna and Albert H Armstrong is strong evidence of his youth. Continued research is being done on this information.

Although William's background is somewhat uncertain, he is known to have married Nellie Sole on Feb. 15, 1897 in Pontiac, Michigan, stating his age as 22 years. William and Nellie, initially lived in Avon Twp, Oakland County, Michigan. Later building their home on Crescent Lake. They raised 3 children, Grace, Hugh and William. That sturdy home, remains today, next to Optimist Park on Elizabeth Lake Road. William is remembered for his prize Chester White hogs that earned blue ribbons during the early days of the Michigan State Fair. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

As of March 5, 2018 it has been resolved that the links to his family are indeed correct thru the DNA of a relative of one of his siblings. Honored to have broken thru the brick wall.
