HEPPNER - James H. "Jim" Hayes, 72, of Heppner died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 at the United Methodist Church in Heppner.

Mr. Hayes was born Aug. 12, 1936, in Heppner to James J. and Vivian Stout Hayes. He was raised and attended school in Heppner, graduating from Heppner High School. He then attended Oregon State University in Corvallis. Following his graduation from Oregon State University he became an officer in the Navy, where he flew helicopters during the early Viet Nam War. Following his Navy career he piloted commercial airliners for Pan American Airways.

In 1961 he married Barbara Baker at Pensacola, Fla. The couple had two sons; the family moved from Medford to Heppner in 1976.

He coached little league and was a 4-H leader. He became an avid golfer and served a term on the Willow Creek Golf Course Board. He also served on the Morrow County Museum Board. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and RVing, which included being a member of the Pendleton Rovin' Elks. He also enjoyed watching high school athletic events.

Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife Barbara of Heppner; sons James W. "Jay" Hayes of Marshall, Mich., and Loran Hayes of Greenville, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
