Nancy, born in Illinois, was the daughter of Phillip & Elizabeth (Parks) Ballard.

She married Almarion Gaer on 16 November 1849.
Their marriage license was the first marriage license issued in Marshall county after the county was organized.

They lived in Marshall County, Iowa until about the mid 1880s when they moved to Shelby County, Iowa.
