Levi Graham Osborne and his wife, with another couple (*their daughter with her husband and their child) in their car were driving home to Louisville, KY when an Army half-track from the Fort Knox reservation hit their car. Levi was killed instantly, the child in the car was killed instantly and all others were very badly injured.
For weeks his wife, Myrtle Ruth Probus Osborne, was in intensive care and was thought she would not survive. His body was being held pending her passing, so that they could be buried together.
He was employed by Girdler Corporation, Tube Turns at 28th & Broadway, Louisville, KY.
I was expecting to find a large news article about this accident in the Hardin County, KY newspapers, BUT it was WWII and there was NO mention in the Hardin County Independent and only this in the News-Enterprise: " Louisville man and his grandchildren were killed in wreck at Grahamton." 3 Others Hurt As Sedan Hits Army Vehicle
Collision of a sedan with an Army half-track in a convoy of Fort Knox vehicles near Grahamtown, Meade County, brought death to two Louisvillians and serious injury to three others at 7 p.m. Saturday on the highway leading to Brandenburg.
The dead are:
Levi Graham Osborne, 45, of 1133 E. Broadway, a machine operator for Tube Turns for fifteen years.
Beverly Gail Walts, his 8-week-old grandaughter.
3 Taken to Hospital
The injured are:
Mrs. Myrtle R. Osborne, 41, wife of Levi Graham Osborne, in St. Joseph Infirmary with both legs broken.
Marion Walts, 22, of 2229 W. Broadway, father of the baby, in the same hospital with broken arm and leg and other injuries.
Mrs. Jessie Walts, 21, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Osborne and mother of the baby, also hospitalized with a broken ankle and possible internal injuries.
Car Driven by Walts
Military authorities at Fort Knox said the automobile was coming in the opposite direction from the convoy of twelve half-tracks and the driver apparently did not see a curve or lost control of the car and it crashed into one of the military vehicles.
Relatives here said Walts, also an employee of Tube Turns, was driving the car. The injured were taken to the Fort Knox hospital and later brought to Louisville.
Mr. Osborne was an active member of the East Baptist Church and of the Modern Woodmen of the World. Other survivors are three other daughters, Mrs. Gladys Reister, Mrs. Glenna Howe and Miss Katherine Osborne; a sister, Mrs. Ailene Wessell, St. Louis, and three brothers, Ted Osborne, Willis Osborne and Tennant Osborne. Joint funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the East Baptist Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
