Henry Spencer Allen & Anna (Hill) Allen were natives of New York, the former born in Washington county, in 1803, and the latter in Wayne county, in 1805. They were married in Wayne County around 1824 and there reared their family and spent the remainder of their lives. Early in their married life, Henry and Anna moved to a small tract of land which he had purchased in Wayne county, containing a log cabin, surrounded by a few acres. The move was made in the winter and the first recollections of their young son, Emery, were the hardships and difficulties encountered during that particularly severe season. During the journey, which was made in a wagon, Henry lay on a bed, having suffered the loss of one leg, a tree having fallen upon it necessitating its amputation. Thus the brunt of the labor rested upon Anna and her family. Snowfall was unusually heavy that winter, often drifting into the cabin through the top of the windows and the doors, and neighbors dug a passage from the house to the shed in order that Anna might go to care for the stock. When Henry had sufficiently recovered from his accident he made himself a wooden leg and was then able to cut firewood, which grew thick all around the cabin. The parents and their little children passed that terrible winter and by spring conditions improved. Henry cleared his tract and among the stumps planted an orchard which within a few years was bearing apples. As he prospered he bought more pigs, cows and chickens. The family made their own maple sugar and exchanged butter and eggs in payment for groceries. Henry and Anna were the parents of eight children, William; Emery, of Corvallis, Oregon; Louisa; Alonzo, a resident of Charlotte, Michigan; Lydia; Mrs. Lucia Carey; and Mrs. Emma Holtam, of Ontario, NY; and Daniel. Henry Spencer Allen passed away 31 Oct 1881 at the age of seventy-eight years, and Anna Allen on February 2, 1891 at age of eighty-six years. They were earnest, hard-working people, and gave their children as good opportunities as could be obtained.
