On the evening of 20 July, he was with several friends at a downtown hotel lobby, seemingly in very good spirits, and was playing with and twirling a 32 revolver. His friends warned him to put the gun away. A short time later, he and his business partner had walked outside and Ben raised the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. He died almost immediately. His friends and business partner couldn't think of any reason for him to commit suicide. His death certificate says: "Gunshot wound in right temple (accidental)(presumed)".
