They came to Iowa for a short time then settled in Platte Co. Nebraska.
She married James McPhillips on Feb. 8 1899. They lived in Platte Co. at Farwell before moving to Wood River, where they resided until James McPhilllps' death. During their marriage they had eight children; Earl, Lawrence, Thomas, Margaret, Viola, Edward, Everett and Donald. Margaret died when she was three years old of hiccups which wore her heart down. They worked hard on the farm, had fun with card games and dancing at the grange, They were a tight clan and Mary Jane was the pivitol person in the family. After her husband died she followed her sons to Seattle, Washington. Thomas, (and for a time Edward,) Donald, Everett and Viola were in Seattle while her older sons maintained their families in Nebraska. In 1955, she lost another of her children, Everett, to a drowning in Alaska.
For a time she had lived with Everett and his wife and Thomas. She also lived with Viola for a time. Finally, having suffered a stroke, she went to a nursing home where she died in 1959 of a heart attack. At the time of her death she had five surviving sons, one daughter, 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The mass was held at St. Mary's church and she was laid to rest at St. Mary's cemetery, Hall County, Nebraska, beside her husband, James..
