Amelia Mathilda Wessel was born February 5, 1875 in Bielefeld, Germany. She was the third child of Johann Heinrich Gottlieb Wessel and Maria Sophia (nee Doht) Wessel.

Amelia first married Charles William Tharp on March 7, 1897. Amelia had one daughter, Marie Ellen Tharp, born in July of 1901. Amelia's marriage to Charles Tharp ended when Charles died in December of 1926.

Amelia re-married (date unknown) to Albert Kay. It appears Amelia and Albert resided in Hastings, Nebraska. Albert pre-deceased Amelia in 1941. Amelia lived another 22 years.
