b. September 17, 1842, Knox co., Illinois, son of Alexander and Malita (McDonald) McKee, b. Illinois (his father b. Pennsylvania, mother, b. Pa. ). James enrolled at Camp Butler, Illinois, on the 18th of October, 1861, as a private in Co. D 64th Ill. Infantry.
James was mentioned by John A. Smith as being captured by the confederates in a letter to Susannah George
At the time of his enlistment he was described as being 5' 9" in height, fair complexion, black hair and blue eyes and occupation, farmer. He was wounded in action at Kenasaw Mt., Georgia, on June the 27th, 1864 taking a shell through his right knee, while in the line of battle in regular engagement. He was also taken prisoner and exchanged. He was honorable discharged, July 11, 1865 at Louisville, Ky.

J. M. McKee, who has been making his home with J. W. VanBuskirk, died sometime during Sunday night. He had been very sick for some time and a month or so ago was taken to the Soldiers Home at Leavenworth where he could be taken care of, but he returned from there some time ago and and has been able to be around most of the time but badly afflicted. Monday morning on going to his room to see how he was, they found him dead.
The funeral was held Tuesday forenoon at the M. E. Church and burial in the City cemetery....
