DEATH RECORD

John Newton Rice

The following regarding the death of a former resident of this county is from the Harvard, Nebr., Courier:

John Newton Rice was born near the town of Mercer, Mercer county, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1832, where his family went through the hardships of the early settlers in clearing up the timberland and establishing homes, and where he spent his early life till at the age of about twenty-one he came to Roseville, Illinois, where he was soon joined in marriage to Amy Axtell, who, with her family had moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania a year or two before. To this union eight children were born, five sons and three daughters, all but one of whom are living. He also has nineteen grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. On account of his wife's poor health he moved to Grinnell, Iowa, in 1862 and afterwards to Crete, Nebraska, and later to Antelope county, this state, where his wife died on Dec. 15, 1893. In November, 1895 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Carscallen of Oakdale, Nebraska and then lived in Neligh until they moved to Harvard in the spring of 1907, where he had since lived.

About forty years ago through an accident he lost the use of one eye and from over strain and advancing age he gradually lost the use of the other eye, so for the past three or four years has been almost totally blind.

When quite young he became an active member of the Presbyterian church, but on coming west united with the Congregational church and has been a member of that church ever since and always interested in trying to build up Sunday school and church work. He was a lover of music and sang bass in the Congregational church in Grinnell, Iowa, for eleven years. He had a strong robust constitution and lived an active life until the gradual hardening of his arteries and blindness caused him to give up all kinds of work. On December, 14 1917, he had his third paralytic stroke which rendered him perfectly helpless, but he bore with patience the long confinement to his bed, often passing the time in singing songs and repeating verses he had learned when young and in visiting with people he imagined to be with him till the end came on Friday evening, October 10, 1919, when without a struggle, he slept himself away to a better land, after living 87 years, 2 months and 4 days.

The funeral services were held at his late home at 8:30 o'clock, October 14, in time to take the morning train for Elgin, Nebraska, where the remains were laid beside his first wife, Rev Triplett had charge of the services at the home.

NOTE:
The last child to be linked to the parents is Jesse Albert Rice who last lived in California. So far no burial information can be found for him.
