[1846-1931] Son of Matthew Smith, and brother of Michael Holroyd Smith and Frederick Smith. He was a director of the family's wire-making company Frederick Smith & Company.
In 1892, he was elected to Halifax Town Council, and he strongly supported the idea that the trams be operated by the council. He was Mayor of Halifax [1895-1897]
Educated at King Edward's Grammar School Birmingham
Aged 14 was apprenticed to an Iron Merchant but returned with his parenst to Halifax in 1864
First elected to Halifax Town Council in 1892 for Skircoat Ward as a Liberal
JP from 1894 and from the West Riding from 1905
Elected Mayor in 1895 Welcomed the Duke & Dutchess of York to Halifax on July 15th 1896
In 1897 he was Mayor in the Jubilee Year of Queen Victoria anmd attended many events in London
He formally opened the new Technical College on Jan 15 1896
He was a strong supporter for The Victoria Hall and laid the Foundation Stone on May 6th 1899
He was a Congregationalist Deacon at Park Church WM of Probity Lodge in Jan 1896, having been initianted in 1884
First Halifax man to receive Grand Lodge honours
In 1872 he married Mary Louisa FARRAR and they had 2 sons and 5 daughters, After Mary died he married Hattie Fisher, in 1891 and added his wife's name to his own, becoming George Henry Fisher Smith. He was knighted in 1913. Hattie was said to be a formidable lady, and the driving force behind the knighthood.

Made Freeman of Halifax Nov 9th 1918
He lived at The Gleddings in Birdcage Lane until his death in 1931. Lady Fisher-Smith remained there until she died in 1938
They are buried together in Warley Cemetery
The portrait of him by Richard Jack RA hangs in The Civic Theatre and another is in the Town Hall
