Following her mother and step-father's typhoid deaths at Rochester's Old Saint Joe's parish in 1859, Elizabeth is thought to have been raised by her namesake and aunt in Rochester, as well as been indentured to a milliner at Hammondsport, N.Y. during her youth. Her Aunt Barbara lived at Hammondsport; the milliner is alleged to have been Rhuhama Aulls.
