Obituary Memphis Reveille newspaper, Memphis Missouri:

Jess M Poe was born July 20, 1870 near Memphis, MO. and died at the home of his brother, Otis Poe, near Downing, November 28, 1917 from Dropsy, age 47 years and 4 months.

He leaves to mourn his death, his mother, Mrs Thirza Poe of Memphis, three brothers, Otis of Downing, Glen and Ernest of Weldona, Colorado and his sisters, Mrs. Frank Israel and Mrs Ross Leach both of Memphis. He had many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev C K Green at Hitt and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery there.

......
Jesse is not listed with the family in the 1900 census in Scotland County, Missouri. Nor is he found anywhere in the 1910 census.

Family legend: Jesse left home as a young man on one of his father's horses and his whereabouts were not known for many years until a doctor called from Peoria, Illinois that he was very ill. His brother, Otis, and his mother took the train from Memphis to Peoria to bring him home. He died seven months later.

Jesse may have changed his name to James after he left home as evidenced by a letter found in the family keepsakes from a law firm in Peoria, Illinois dated September 1, 1916 that states that James Poe, of the city of East Peoria, County of Tazewell, State of Illinois, was injured by reasons of inhaling gas while and during the time he was in the employ of Peoria Culvert & Manufacturing Co., Tazewell County, State of Illinois.
The letter continues that James Poe is wholly incapacitated by reasons of said and he believes is totally and permanently injured...that the approximate cause of his condition was sustained by reasons of inhaling gas while in their employ on or about the 15th day of April, 1915 and that he was overcome and placed in the hands of medical care and and that the said Peoria Culvert & Mfg Co. refused to settle with him for same.
And further, that James Poe is desirous of bringing suit or such other action as may be necessary to recover said amounts as may be due by reasons of same, but was unable to pay an attorney for his services in bringing said suit or other actions. The law firm of Barnes and Summay agreed to take on the lawsuit for a recovery fee.

Nothing further found for this action. But, it was shortly after this occurrence that the above call was received by Effie Poe, his sister and his mother and brother Otis went to Peoria to bring Jesse home.
