Ernest J. Vickers

Wednesday afternoon, June 3, at 3 o'clock, Ernest J. Vickers answered the final summons at his home in this city. He had been ill for three weeks, first with sciatic rheumatism and after with a complication of diseases. Everything that love and skill could do for the patient sufferer was in vain while friends and relatives watched by his bedside in impotent despair for many days. Seldom have the sympathies of the community been touched as they have over the death of this great hearted citizen. The entire community is shrouded in gloom and all hearts bleed for the stricken family.

Ernest J. Vickers was born in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Feb. 11, 1865. His early manhood was spent in Nebraska where he was married in 1887 to Miss Julia Shinn. To this union were born seven children, five daughters and two sons, all of whom are living. In February 1904, the deceased came to Meridian and went into the hardware business with E.E. Sims under the firm name of Vickers-Sims Hardware Company which has been one of the solid business houses of Meridian ever since. Mrs. Vickers died in Feb. 1905 and the father's devotion to his motherless family was one of the beautiful things of his admirable life. In Feb. 1907, Mr. Vickers was united in marriage to Mrs. Mayme Gilbert, who, with two brothers, survives him.

Twice within three months the death angel has visited the Vicker's home. Mrs. Vickers' daughter, Mrs. R.G. Jordan, having been called to the better land on March 27. Mrs. Vickers is prostrated under her double bereavement.
