LOGAN, UTAH: Lorenzo "Ren" Funk Hansen, 94, died unexpectedly Saturday, 13 September 2003 at Logan Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

A resident of Logan since 1921, he was born June 23, 1909 at the family home in Fielding, Utah, to Willard S. and Caroline Funk Hansen. He attended Brigham Young College and the newly established Logan High School where he completed his studies in 1927. He then attended Utah State Agricultural College (now USU), graduating in 1935 with an engineering degree.

Lorenzo married the love of his life, Elma Maurine Johnson on Leap Day, February 29, 1936 at Ogden City Hall. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple June 2, 1955. Together they made their livelihood farming near Collinston. He served on boards of the Box Elder County grain cooperative and received awards for pioneering work in land terracing which promoted soil conservation.

He also worked for the state roads department :from the 1930s-1950s as a surveyor during the winter months, and was employed during World War II as a civilian defense worker at the Ogden Defense Depot where he did mechanical work and directed prisoner of war work projects.

Lorenzo was active in community organizations, joining the Sons of Utah Pioneers and Mormon Battalion in 1962. For many years, he participated in parades, encampments, and meetings of both organizations and served in honor guards for graveside services. He served a term as national vice president of the Sons of Utah Pioneers. He also had membership in the Cache Valley Historical Society.

He was an avid reader and continued to learn throughout his life. He enthusiastically supported education and loved young people. In his last years, he served as a volunteer in Logan city schools listening to children read.

A high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served his Logan 6th Ward congregation by active participation in Church welfare farm projects.

In 1999, He and Elma moved to Williamsburg Retirement center. Lorenzo remained there after Elma's death in March 2000 and appreciated the :friendships of so many dear neighbors and employees.

He is survived by daughters Marie (Jack) Christensen and Linda (Kenneth) Finchum of Logan, grandchildren, Ann C. Smith, Keith R. Christensen, Scott R. Christensen, Melissa F. Olson, and Carrie F. Quesnell, and by great-grandchildren Lisa, Mark, Katelin and Jennifer Christensen, Megan and Dana Olson, Aaron and Nicholas Quesnell, and Jacob Lorenzo and Tate Christensen. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and by all nineteen of his siblings. Above all else, he cherished his family and rejoiced in their successes and happiness.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at 12:00 pm in the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan. Friends may call at the mortuary Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the mortuary and on Wednesday from 10:30 - 11:45 am. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
