From the Philadelphia Inquirer, July 31, 1899:
Died at Ninety-eight
John Butler, a widely known resident of Wissahickon, died yesterdaymorning at his home, 114 Hermit street, from general debility, at theadvanced age of 98 years. Mr. Butler was born near Belfast, Ireland,August 2, 1801. He was a papermaker in the old country until 1864, whenhe came to America and settled in Manayunk. Later he went intopartnership with his son at New Hope, Bucks county, in the manufacturingof paper. He retired in 1871. He had 11 children, 35 grandchildren, 41great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.

Butler- On July 30, 1899. John Butler, aged 98 years. The relatives andfriends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeralservices, on Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, at his late residence No.114 Hermit street, Wissahickon. Interment private.

An advise from Philadelphia USA announces the death of Mr. John Butler,paper maker, who was born near Belfast, Ireland, on September 2, 1801. Hewent to the United States in 1864 and subsequently started a papermillwith his son, Mr. James Butler. He retired in 1871.
