Jon was born June 22, 1942 in Clarinda, Iowa to Vern Epperson and Mary Edith Apple Abbott. He graduated from Clarinda High School and attended the University of Iowa. He married Sandra Smith on November 30, 1963 in Clarinda and they moved to McAlester in December of 1973. He worked in McAlester for 40 years as a managing partner for Brown Shoe Fit Company and also served on their board of directors. After retirement in 2003 he obtained his realty license and was currently an agent for First Realty, Inc. He was an active member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church and a member of the TNT Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Mens Group. He also loved fishing and golf. John passed away at his residence at the age of 62. Services were held February 14, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church. Interment was private with the family at Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service with Dr. David Cressman officiating and eulogy by Don Lewis. Pallbearers were Roger Parham, Joe Waldron, Randy Saunier, Dick Lane, Lee Smith and Alan Abbot. Honorary pallbearers were the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church and TNT Sunday School Class.
