Son of David and Mary (Murray or Morrow) Nickle of Beaver County, Pennsylvania.

He first married Isabel Anders about 1832 at Economy, Pennsylvania. [Per the Widow's Civil War Pension Application of his widow, Sarah (Wooley) Nickle]. Isabel died 11 December 1845 at Hamilton (Boone County) Kentucky, per a physician's statement in William's Pension File.

He married Sarah Wooley 20 Feb 1848 at Vevay, Switzerland County, Indiana.

On 27 Dec 1848, they bought 160 acres in Sec 25, T43-R22 of Benton County (south-east of present day Ionia).

William was a 44 year old farmer, on 9 Apr 1862, when he enlisted as a Sergeant of Capt. Abraham Danets(?) Company E of the 7th Regiment Cavalry Missouri State Militia, to serve three years in the Union Army; he was 5 feet 10 inches high, "sand complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair"
