Enlisted August 11, 1862 as Private in Company H 99th OVI. Captured September 20, 1863 at Battle of Chichamauga, Georgia. Died a POW at Danville POW camp. Because the 99th OVI was consolidated with the 50th OVI, he is listed on both Rolls of honor for Both regiments-ironically the 50th OVI Roll of Honor Reports he was buried in Grave # 683 and that he died December 31, 1863. However his grave cannot be found. Ironically his Brother Aaron Swander was killed on June 20, 1864 in Georgia and is buried in a known grave in Marietta National Cemetery memorial.
A cenotaph memorial to both brothers is near their parents gravestone In Shelby County Ohio.
