Scottish missionary. He became a Wesleyan missionary after his early career as a gardener in Cheshire, Northern England. He joined the London Missionary Society and was sent to South Africa in 1816. His wife Mary (1795-1870) shared much of his mission work. They founded a church at Kuruman in 1825, which is now a national monument. He also established a mission at Inyati for the Matabele in 1859. During this period, he conveyed results of his journeys to the Royal Geographical Society. They were forced to leave Africa in 1870, due to failing health. On his return to England, he received a testimonial of £5000 pounds, the equivalent of £500,000 pounds today. The renowed Scottish explorer David Livingstone married their eldest daughter.
