Bio for John R. Gregg
John R. Gregg was born 4 Oct 1858 in Rock Creek, Wells County, Indiana. His parents were Robert Gregg and Elizabeth Conner, both born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States. They first settled in Ohio then moved to Rock Creek, Wells County, Indiana, with the early settlers. They were a farming family.
John married Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lesh on 3 Jul 1879 in Wells County, Indiana. Her parents were Peter Lesh and Amanda Jane Gilbert. A farming family that moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania to Rock Creek, Wells County, Indiana with the early settlers.
Children of John R. Gregg and Sarah Elizabeth Lesh were:
Bert (Bertie) Raymond Gregg, born 8 Nov 1880
Edward Maynard Gregg, born 31 May 1882
Clara Etta Gregg, born 8 Aug 1885
Fred Howard Gregg, born 29 Jun 1888
Earl Gregg, born 20 Jul 1890 and died 16 Oct 1891
Harold Clarence Gregg, born 2 Jan 1893
John's wife, Sarah (Lesh) Gregg, died 19 Aug 1894 at the young age of 31, leaving John, age 36, to manage the farm and raise his five children ranging in ages of 14 to 1 years old. Harold the youngest was only 1 at the time and in poor health so was immediately taken to the home of their grandmother, Amanda Lesh. Soon afterward the other two youngest, Clara, age 9, and Fred, age 6, followed to their grandmother's house as John was unable to take care of them and make a living. The older two children, Bert, age 14, and Edward, age 12, were able to provide for themselves. Bert moved to Colorado soon after and Edward moved to Washington a few years later.
In 1899, John was a resident of Van Buren, Grant County, and had resided there for three years, employed at pumping in the oil field. During this time he made about $60 per month.
Clara married Sherman Paxson on 26 Sep 1902 and moved out. Fred moved to Colorado with his brother Bert for awhile and married Faye Hadley about 1911 in Colorado, then they moved to California. Harold was the only child left living with Amanda when a terrible accident happened.
On 21 Oct 1920 Amada Lesh, aged 70, was burned so badly that she was not expected to recover as the result of an explosion of a can of kerosene at her home five miles north of Liberty Center. Harold Gregg, her grandson, who was raised in the Lesh home, heard the explosion from his room upstairs and climbed down a porch to get to the kitchen to drag the aged woman away from the flames. Her clothes were burning, but he extinguished the flame by the aid of a blanket. Mrs. Lesh was terribly burned about the head and chest. Neighbors rushed in and saved the dwelling which was badly gutted. Amanda died the next day from her burns.
John R. Gregg died on 17 Jun 1933, Bluffton, Wells, Indiana and was buried in St. Paul Cemetery, Uniondale, Wells County, Indiana.
