From an article in The Cortland Democrat, Cortland, New York, Friday, March 18, 1955, by the Virgil Historical Society, Mrs. L. F. Bristol writes, "Several legal documents were read which were taken from the collection given to the Society a year ago." The papers were "left by Thomas Mott, who was justice in Virgil for nearly 40 years." After describing several, she writes, "Another interesting paper was when Simeon LeRoy, Revolutionary Soldier asked for a pension of $36.66 per annum. He was living in Owasco, Cayuga County when He applied for a pension on Sept. 21, 1832 stating he was 72 years old and blind. It was granted to him September 5, 1833. Signed by Lewis Cass, Secretary of War and J. L. Edwards, Com. of Pensions. His attorney was Henry S. Randall." He later moved to Virgil, Cortland County where he resided until his death, probably at the home of his daughter Mrs. Asher Shepherd (who is also buried at Virgil Cemetery) or his granddaughter Mrs. Eber Simonds.
