Civil War Union soldier from Kelso in Sibley County, Minnesota. He was a farmer before the war. He enlisted at the age of 25, signing up with Company A, First Minnesota Infantry on April 29, 1861. In the summer of 1862, the First Minnesota had been acting as a rear guard unit, stalling the Confederates on the Wiliamsburg Road. During the Battle of Savage Station on June 29, 1862, he was killed in the late afternoon when he was struck by a cannon ball passed through his body. He most likely was buried on the battlefield, but no marker has been found.

His widow, Elizabeth, applied for a pension on March 17, 1879.
