John H. Stone was born March 22, 1827, in Lauderdale County, Alabama to William Nicholas Zachary Stone (1796-1880) and Sarah Flanders (1806-1847) and died following a buggy accident October 01, 1900, in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi. He is buried at Stone Cemetery in Holly Springs, MS. His will was probated October 29, 1900, in Marshall, Mississippi with a will date of August 25, 1900. He left everything to his wife S.E. Stone. John's obituary mentions he had ten children, though no evidence of a tenth child has currently been located. All 9 children are accounted for on the census records 1860-1900.

John enlisted April 26, 1861, as a Private in the 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company C in Selma, Alabama, and mustered out May 07, 1861. According to unnamed family sources, John hid from the Union Army in a hollowed-out oak tree for three days while they sacked his house. Allegedly a soldier left money under Nancy's pillow as compensation.

John received a Presidential Pardon from Benjamin Harrison in 1891 after he was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a $100 fine for accidentally failing to pay taxes. The same unnamed source says he was granted the pardon because "it appeared John was acting in the capacity of a clerk for his employer and the violation was not intentional."
