MADISON - Janet A. Schmitt, age 44, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center following a valiant struggle with cancer and treatment complications. She was born on Aug. 10, 1961, in Madison, the daughter of John and Nikki (Lehikoinen) Stilen.

Janet graduated from Middleton High School in 1979. In 1984, she graduated from UW-Madison with a double major in mathematics and computer science. After working for IBM in Rochester, Minn., she returned to Madison to complete her master's degree in business administration at UW-Madison.

Janet worked at information technology services for CUNA Mutual and UW-Extension. On Aug. 8, 1992, Janet was united in marriage to Steven Schmitt at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in Fitchburg. On July 30, 1994, they were blessed with a daughter, Natalie, who has been a treasure to them.

Janet was a very active member of All Saints Lutheran Church from 2000 until her death. In her spare time, Janet enjoyed gardening, genealogy, camping, and fishing. Most of all she was a big enthusiastic supporter of Natalie's activities including Ridgewood Pool, Madison West YMCA, and Verona Area Soccer Club. Janet cherished the time spent on family vacations and gatherings.

She is survived by her loving husband of 14 years, Steve Schmitt; her daughter, Natalie Schmitt, both of Madison; her mother, Nikki Stilen of Middleton; a sister, Karen (Larry) Konich of Salem, Ore.; and a brother, Larry (Donna) Stilen of Eagle.

Janet is also survived by many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, John Stilen, in 1985; and her sister, Kathleen Stilen, in 1975.

Funeral services will be held at ALL SAINTS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2951 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, on Thursday, July 13, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rich Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery.
