N.J.Infantryman Is Killed In Action On French Front
Cpl.Bruce Harold Schmeal,25,son of Mr.and Mrs.Harold Schmeal,of Hackettstown,N.J.,was killed in action July 15 in France,according to a War Department telegram received yesterday by his parents.Cpl.Schmeal participated in the initial American landings in Africa in the Fall of 1942 and saw action throughout the North African campaign.At conclusion of the Tunisian campaign he was sent to England to help train troops for the invasion of Europe.

Prior to entering service in January,1941,Cpl.Schmeal was employed by the Lackawana Leather Company in Hackettstown.Surviving besides the parents are; brother,William George Schmeal,serving with the Air Corps in Panama City,Fla; sisters,Mrs.Doris S.Christensen,and the Misses.Betty,Rose,Helen,and Lois Schmeal,all of Hackettstown;and grandparents,Mr.and Mrs.George H.Bell,and Margaret Schmeal also of Hackettstow..

Promoted Before Death

Bruce Harold Schmeal,son of Mr.and Mrs.Harold Schmeal,of Hackettstown,N.J.,whose death in action was reported earlier this week,had been promoted from corporal to the rank of Sergant just before he was killed in France,according to information received by the family.

Military Honors Slated At Rites For Sgt.Schmeal

A funeral with full military reburial honors for Sgt.Bruce Harold Schmeal,of Hackettstown,will be conducted on Friday afternoon with services in St.James Episcopal Church Hackettstown.Sgt Schmeal was killed in action in France July 15,1944.The Rev.George H.Palmer,rector of At.James Church,will officiate at the services.Reburial will be in Hackettstown Union cemetery.Members of Blue Ridge Post,American Legion,of Hackettstown,will be in charge of the military exercise.

Sgt.Schmeal was among the first to be inducted into the Army from the Hackettstown area.He trained at Fort Bragg.N.C.,and went overseas in Nov.1942,participating in the landing at North Africa.After serving through the conclusion of the Tunisian campaign he saw action in Sicily.He was then transferred to England,where he helped train troops for the invasion of Normandy.Sgt Schmeal landed in France on June 10,1944,which was his 25th birthday anniversary.Born in Hackettstown he was a son of Mr.and Mrs.Harold W.Schmeal.He attended Hackettstown schools,where he was active in several sports.Prior to his induction,he was employed at Lackawanna Leather Co,of Hackettstown.Surviving,in addition to his parents,are a brother and four sisters.
