John Burr Harrison was born June 1, 1848, in Cordova, Grant County, Kentucky, the son of Dr. John Clarence Harrison, M. D. (1801-1850) and Mary Ann "Pollie" Eppperson (1805-1852).

John served with the Union Army during the Civil and in 1883 he was a member of the Kansas Grand Army of the Republic Post in Anthony, Harper County, Kansas. According to census records, John was a farmer. According to family story, John was a drummer boy and was only 14 years old. After returning rom the Civil War, John moved to Missouri.

John married Martha Elizabeth O'Dell on July 23, 1876, in Caldwell County, Missouri. Martha was born July 14, 1858, in Ray County, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas Benton and Lydia Ann (Myers) O'Dell. John and Martha had the following known children:

2. Mary Willena (Harrison) Simmons (1878-1958)
3. Eliza Adene (Harrison) 1) Parson, 2) Holland (1882-1967)
4. Lydia Francis (Harrison) Hawks (1884-1918)

Martha died May 9, 1924, in Woodward, Woodward County, Oklahoma. John died August 7, 1933, in Woodward, Woodward County, Oklahoma.
