Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Thomas Heflin, 85, Civil War veteran, whose death occured January 7, 1926 at his home here in Atwood. Final rites were held in the family residence with burial in Mackville Cemetery.

Mr. Heflin was born December 24, 1840 in Ohio and his early life was passed there. From that state he enlisted in the Army during the Civil War, serving through the conflict in the First Ohio Cavalry. He came to Illinois later, coming to Atwood some twenty years ago. Because of his advanced age he had retired from active labor.

In 1861 he married Rebecca Orahood. To them were born six children, three of whom died in childhood, the wife dying in 1895. In 1920 he married Mrs. Lucinda Morris of Atwood, who survives him. He also leaves two sons and a daughter: G. F. and Mrs. C. F. JOnes, Decatur; and C. F. of Monticello; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Heflin was a member of the Methodist Church and was known to his many friends as "Uncle Tommy". He told many stories of his experience in the Civil War and loved to rehearse the story of how he and one of his comrades escaped from Libby Prison, always carrying with him the key that opened the gate for them.
