Oct 2019 - I believe this to be the son of Harlow and Betsey (Walker) Purple. He is one of 5 boys, most likely the youngest.

His father died when he was about 1 year old (14 Sep 1840).

In the 1850 census we find Eugene's mother Betsey living with her father (John B Walker) but the only child there is Norman, age 15. Since Eugene was not with his mother in the 1850 census, I assume he was given to a relative to raise when he was younger. At the time of her husband's death she had 5 boys, all under the age of 10.

1867 - 2 June 1867 - Records from the Congregational Church of Owego (which can be found in the Tioga County Historical Society) lists his marriage to Elizabeth J Cooley in Owego. Clergy : James C Beecher. Witnesses : Laforest B Cooley, Jasper L Purple, F G Newels.

Also the records show an Owego Gazette note of their marriage which reads : 6 June 1867. Purple, Eugene married 2 June 1867, Miss Libbie J Cooley at residence of bride's parents in Owego by Rev James Beecher.

Note : Jasper L Purple was Eugene's brother.

In the 1870 Federal Census I found a Eugene Purple living in Oswego NY in the household of Henry and Eliza Lewis where Henry is s city solicitor. Eugene is working in a sash factory and there is a Elizabeth Purple (his first wife) listed after him : age 22 born about 1848 in New York. No children listed. She is Elisabeth Cooley, daughter of LaForest and Caroline Cooley of Owego NY.

1875 New York census - Living in Oswego NY in the household of Eli and Annie Barnes. He is listed as a boarder age 31, along with his wife Elisabeth who is listed as age 28. No children are listed.

1880 census - Elisabeth is listed as single living in Owego NY with her parents, no children are listed.

1880 Census - Eugene is living as a boarder at 51 Magne St in Rochester New York in the household of Francis and Rebecca Rubadou (?). Eugene is working in a furniture workshop, he is listed as being married but no wife or children are listed.

At about age 41, in the 1881 Rochester City Directory we find Eugene living at 7 Charles St, laborer. In the 1882 directory he is still living at 7 Charles St and is listed as a carpenter, just like his brother Jasper. In the 1883 directory he is living at 27 Lind St as a carpenter "Jay cor. Erie Canal". In all cases it appears he is living in a house. His name does not appear in the 1880 city directory.

In the Friday 9 Nov 1883 issue of "The Palladium" newspaper we find a short article about him falling down stairs, being in a unconscious state, not regaining consciousness and dying at about seven o'clock. The article refers to a Tuesday article in the Rochester Union which says this happened yesterday, so his date of death would be Monday 5 Nov 1883.

At that time he was in the employ of Copeland, Hall & Co as a cabinet maker.

The article mentions he leaves a wife and 2 children. I have connected with a descendant of this family and this was Eugene's second wife : Mineola Purvington. Their children are :
- Tina Eugenia Purple born about 1880
- Nora Purple, born about 1882
Tina was married to Wilbur Stanton Russell, Jr.
