The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa; Thursday, May 18, 1905

The many friends of the family were saddened by the news of the death of MRS. SUSAN BUTCHER, which occurred at her home in this city on Monday morning, May 15, 1905, at 5:45 o'clock, after an illness of about ten days with paralysis. She was stricken on Friday, May 5, and remained in an unconscious condition until her death. Funeral services conducted by Rev. W.S. McCullagh were held at the family home on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, and were largely attended. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful and testified to the high regard in which deceased was held. At the close of the services the remains were interred in the Chariton Cemetery.

MISS SUSAN FRANK was born in North Carolina on April 17, 1826. When about three years old she moved with her parents to Putnam County, Indiana. She was married there October 8, 1854, to JOHN BUTCHER, who died eight years ago. Fifty years ago last April the family moved to Warren County, Iowa and twenty-six years ago they came to Chariton which has since been their home. MRS. BUTCHER was the mother of six children, four boys and two girls, all of whom with the exception of one daughter, CLARA, preceded her to the better land.

Deceased did not live a selfish life but was ever ready to aid the distressed. She had been a member of the Evangelical Church for many years and her religious life was devout and practical. She was a loving mother, a kind neighbor and friend, and her death is sincerely mourned by all who knew her. Her daughter, CLARA, and grandson, OTHO J. BUTCHER, and other sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of the community in their great grief.
