Jacob was the son of Peter and Sophia (Kinch) Bechtel. He married Anna Moyer in Richland, Vinton, Ohio, April 20, 1837. The couple moved to Elkhart County, Indiana, about 1849 and lived there for the rest of their lives.

Jacob and Anna were the parents of nine children:
