Andrew Looper Keith was born in the Chestatee area of Forsyth County, Georgia. He accumulated land in Forsyth and Hall Counties, owned and operated a ferry across the Chestatee river, joining the two counties, Forsyth and Hall. After the Civil War he replaced the ferry with a bridge and later getting a contract with the government he replaced that bridge with a much larger covered bridge, known as Keith Bridge.

Enlisted/mustered-in as a Private (Pvt), Company A ("Gainesville Light Infantry"), 11th Regiment, Georgia (Volunteer) Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate States Army (CSA) on 3 Jul 1861; elected Junior Second Lieutenant on 22 Sep or 20 Oct 1862, elected/promoted to Second Lieutenant (2Lt) on 18 Jul 1863. Surrendered at Appomattox County, Virginia, following The Battle of Appomattox Court House, on 9 Apr 1865.
