In addition to being a farmer, Gustavus held numerous city and county offices in Huntsville, and Walker County: City Marshall from 1887 to 1888; Sheriff from 1899-1900; Tax Assessor from 1904 to 1911. Was also in the automobile business (Oliphint Motors).
Was a "Mason of high degree" in Huntsville, Forrest Lodge.
