William was born and raised in Texas. He and Martha were wed in 1878, in Denton County, where four of his six children were born (William, Claude, James and Edgar). A tinsmith by trade, William eventually brought his family by rail to Fresno, California sometime before 1889. The family moved to San Jose around 1890. Sadly, their infant child (a son) died at two months of age in February of 1891. He was laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose. Then in 1894, their daughter Ida was born.
In 1896, the family moved to Sacramento, where they would reside for 34 years.
William worked as a tinsmith and sheet metal worker for over 20 years for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. At least two of his sons followed in his footsteps. William Clarence worked as a locomotive engineer for Southern Pacific, while Claude worked for them as a boiler maker, before branching off into his own business.
In November of 1928, he and Martha celebrated their golden wedding anniversary (50 years).
By 1930, William was retired. He died in December of that year, in his home at 1525 F Street. He was 76 years of age.
