At Rest Beside her Lamented Nellie
For some time, the death of Mrs. George C. Congdon had been sadly foreseen, only to intensify the sorrow with which it is now lamented. She was a wonderfully patient, loving and good woman. The idol of an idolized family, she was moreover a model of womanly virtues in all the relations of her long and useful life of 77 years, 50 of which had been spent in this city.
With the now aged husband who survives her, she came to Placerville from New York in 1852. For many years they made the Mountjoy and Central Houses, the popular hotels of the city. But the later and declining years of her life had been spent in comparative retirement at the cozy family residence in Upper Placerville. Besides her husband, two daughters and one son, all gifted musicians, with two grandchildren, survive her. They are Mrs. Georgia Ralston, Mrs. Sadie De Voe and Edward M. Congdon. Now for wife and mother, as once before in the past year for their beloved Nellie, their harps are hung on the weeping willows of bereavement.
The funeral last Monday from the family residence to Union Cemetery, was conducted by Rev. E.B. Hays, and by request Dr. J.Q. Wrenn read a beautiful tribute to "mother." The choir consisted of Mrs. Dr. Wrenn, Miss Georgia Pearson and Messrs, Burgess and Farnsworth. The pall-bearers were R.N. Day, A.S. Bosquit, W.W. Crocker, J.F. Limpinsol, John P. Fisher and John Pearson. And so with loving hands and fondest memories, the good mother was borne from our sight to sleep beside her lamented Nellie.

Emma's husband George C. Congdon, 86, grief-stricken, only survived his wife's death by thirteen days. The couple were both mourning the death of the youngest of their ten children, Nellie Conger McFarland, who was buried in this same cemetery just six months earlier.
