Catherine Maria Frances "Kitty" Smith married William Steuben "Billy" Smith (1787-1850) in 1813 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Records conflict on the date, one Russian record noting 5 Feb in the British Chaplaincy, but another later US record noting 19 June. Both Kitty and Billy had accompanied her older sister, Louisa Adams, and Louisa's husband, John Quincy Adams to Russia after John was appointed as ambassador to that nation in 1809. William was a grandson of John Adams and John Quincy's nephew, who served as an aid or "secretary of the American Ligation" in the US Embassy in St. Petersburg.

The date of their return to the US is unverified, but appears to have been 1817, accompanying the Adamses to other diplomatic posts during the Madison presidency and thereafter, and who did return to the US that year.

Kitty and Billy had one confirmed offspring, daughter Caroline Amelia Smith, born in St. Petersburg on 7 Mar 1814, whose death is unconfirmed, but appears to have been overseas by about 1815. Various online trees note as many as three later additional offspring, but without supporting documentation.
