Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hillyer.

She married Dr. Joseph Whitefield Smith at Huntsville, Illinois on August 14, 1887. He was then a school teacher and after their marriage he took up the study of medicine. They had one son Bernard B. Smith.

She was one of the leaders in the work of the Second Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, Illinois. In 1919 she was made life member of the Women's Board of Home Missions of the United States.
