Marvin was 13 days beyond his 20th birthday when he was killed during the Boulder City outpost battle, near Pon Bu Dong and about thirty miles north of Seoul. Boulder City was the last Marine ground action in the Korean War. Sharpnel blew Marvin's machine-gun out of his hands. He suffered severe wounds and died later that night.

Marvin was not quite seventeen when the Korean War broke out 25 June 1950. His father was recently widowed and Marvin looked after his two younger brothers while their father was at work. By August of that year his father had allowed him to join the 45th Oklahoma "Thunderbird" National Guard Division, which had just been activated. Marvin arrived in Korea early in 1951, with the 45th, and he was a cook in a headquarters company. He served two years in the Army and returned home to Oklahoma City in the summer of 1952. In September 1952, Marvin and a buddy decided to join the Marine Corps. They went through boot camp at Camp Pendleton, California and after graduation his buddy was sent to Germany and Marvin was sent to Korea as a replacement in January, 1953. He almost came home.
