Family tradition reports the following: While cutting timber for
railroad ties--lightening struck a tree which fell on Noah crushing
him. During his recovery, a visiting relative unknowingly exposed him
to the smallpox virus and Noah, already in a weakened condition died
shortly after. Noah was buried at night by his brother-in-law Ed Free
to avoid contaminating others. Other sources report that while cutting timber, one of the trees split and jack-knifed striking Noah and injuring him seriously; he died as a result of those injuries.

Note:
Noah Langley MORTON was of Cherokee descent through his father
and probably by his mother though she is shown as a non-citizen with
the Cherokee. He was born July 20, 1876 in the Goingsnake District,
Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. Family tradition says that Noah
was named after William "Bill" LANGLEY and that sometime after Noah's
father died, "Bill" gave him a job. Reportedly Noah's sisters took him to be enrolled on the Dawes Roll in 1904.
Lillie Nancy born in Brentwood, Arkansas. Their marriage
certificate was submitted to the Dawes commission on July 24, 1906.
Noah had daughter "Babe" from a previous marriage to Nora. Lillie and
Noah produced 13 children Bessie, Sterling, William, Walter, Woodrow,
Jesse, Fred, Vernal, Edith, Dallas, Calvin, Ather, and Mildred their
births spanning the end of the Cherokee Nation Indian Territory and
the beginning of Oklahoma's Statehood.

Noah and Lillie MORTON were buried at Upper Camp Creek Cemetery,
north of Muldrow, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma.
