BALFOUR_Iris, Alma (nee Slessor) Born March 25, 1916, Deceased June 26, 2005. Age 89 years. Predeceased by her husband, Bob in 1981, father, Roy Slessor in 1962, mother Nina Slessor in 1977 and brother Earl in 1992. Iris leaves to cherish her memory son Gordon R., daughter and son in law Kathy and Ed Tanner of Tisdale, Sask.; grandchildren: Bob Tanner, Calgary and Erin Tanner of Regina. Her sisters: Mrs. Enid McLaren of Leduc, AB. (her twin) and Mrs. Marge Balfour, Lumsden. Also sisters-inlaw: Doris Downie, Regina, Jean Sawyer, Calgary, Noreen Main, Regina. While born in Kipling, the Slessor family moved to Lumsden, where Iris received her early education. She then attended Teachers' College, in Regina. Upon graduating in 1935, Iris went to teach at rural schools: Cottonwood, Blink Bonny and Bethune. Then, in 1942, Iris began teaching at the Correspondence School. In 1943, she enlisted in the RCAF Women's Division; serving at Rockcliff, Toronto and Lachine PQ. In June, 1946, Iris received her discharge; returning to Regina, working at the Correspondence School, until 1959. On July 1, 1949, Iris and Bob Balfour were married. In the early 50's, their children Gord and Kathy were born. Iris took a "leave of absence: from teaching; resuming her career at Lumsden Elementry School, in 1959, then retiring in 1970. Iris worked at various positions, from 1971 until Bob's retirement in 1979. Iris enjoyed sports, playing cards, handwork and reading. She was also an active community volunteer.
