DEATH
GALBRAITH - On July 13, 1907, at his residence, Papamoa, N.Z., John Cameron Galbraith, the dearly beloved husband of Barbara Galbraith, aged 46 years. BAY OF PLENTY TIMES, VOLUME XXXV, ISSUE 5079, 15 JULY 1907, PAGE 2

It is our sad duty to record the death of one of the best-known residents of the Te Puke district in the person of Mr John Cameron Galbraith, which occurred at his residence, Papamoa, at an early hour on Saturday morning, at the age of 46 years. Deceased had been in failing health for some time, but the end came somewhat suddenly, despite all that medical assistance and loving care could avail. Mr Galbraith was born in Calcutta (India) [sic], being the only surviving child of Mr Robert Sharpe Galbraith, of that city. Deceased was a nephew and adopted son of the late Mr George Galbraith of Tauranga, with whom he went to reside in Scotland when only eight years of age, at the time of his parents' death. He came from Scotland to New Zealand when a young man, being accompanied by his cousin, the late Mr Robert Sharpe Galbraith (subsequently elected mayor of Tauranga) and other members of the latter's family. The passage was made from London in the sailing ship Lady Jocelyn with the first Te Puke settlers, the party landing at Tauranga in January, 1881. Deceased then commenced business as a general storekeeper in Te Puke, establishing the "Pioneer" store, the first in the district. He conducted the business for many years, and then gave up mercantile pursuit and settled on his farm at Papamoa, where he has resided of late years, engaging in dairy farming, and also acting as secretary to the Bay of Plenty Co-operative Dairy Association since its inception. Mr Galbraith married a daughter of the late Mr W. Bird (a farmer for many years in Te Puke), and leaves to mourn their loss a widow and seven children— two sons and five daughters. The eldest son is Mr Robert Galbraith, who held a good position in the Telegraph Department, Wellington, and who resigned a few months ago to take charge of his father's farm. The funeral took place yesterday, deceased's remains being laid to rest in the Te Puke cemetery, the concourse of mourners, which extended from the top of the cemetery hill to the saleyards gates, being the largest ever seen in the district, and testified to the great esteem in which deceased was held by his fellow settlers. The last services of the Presbyterian Church were conducted by the Rev. W. Gillies, of Tauranga. On all sides the greatest sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family in the great loss which has befallen them. BAY OF PLENTY TIMES, VOLUME XXXV, ISSUE 5079, 15 JULY 1907, PAGE 2
